Unless the first sentence hooks, you’ve just lost a reader. The aim of the first line is to propel the reader into reading the second, which drives him to read the third, and so on. Editors receive a stack of manuscripts on a daily basis. Excuses such as “it gets better when you get into it” just won’t do.
